What is the most important information I should know about penicillin V?
• Take all of the penicillin V that has been prescribed for you even ifyou begin to feel better penicillin. Your symptoms may begin to improve before the infectionis completely treated penicillin.
• Penicillin V may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills penicillin. Usea second method of birth control while taking penicillin V to protect againstpregnancy penicillin.
What is penicillin V?
• Penicillin V is an antibiotic in the class of drugs called penicillins penicillin. It fights bacteria in your body penicillin.
• Penicillin V is used to treat many different types of infections, suchas tonsillitis, pneumonia, strep throat, bronchitis, and infections of the skin penicillin.
• Penicillin V may also be used for purposes other than those listed inthis medication guide penicillin.
Who should not take penicillin V?
• If you have ever had an allergic reaction to another penicillin or toa cephalosporin, do not take penicillin V unless your doctor is aware of yourallergy and monitors your therapy penicillin.
• Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease,stomach or intestinal disease, or infectious mononucleosis penicillin. You may not be ableto take penicillin V because of an increased risk of side effects penicillin.
• If you are a diabetic, some glucose urine tests may give false positiveresults while you are taking penicillin V penicillin.
• Penicillin V is in the FDA pregnancy category B penicillin. This means that it isunlikely to harm an unborn baby penicillin. Do not, however, take penicillin V withoutfirst talking to your doctor if you are pregnant penicillin.
• It is not known whether penicillin V passes into breast milk penicillin. Do nottake this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feedinga baby penicillin.
How should I take penicillin V?
• Take penicillin V exactly as directed by your doctor penicillin. If you do not understandthese instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them toyou penicillin.
• Take each dose with a full glass of water penicillin.
• Penicillin V can be taken with or without food penicillin. Do not drink fruit juiceor carbonated beverages (soda) with your dose, however penicillin. These beverages willdecrease the effectiveness of the drug penicillin.
• Penicillin V should be taken at evenly spaced intervals throughout theday and night to keep the level in your blood high enough to treat the infection penicillin.
• Shake the liquid form of penicillin V well before measuring a dose penicillin. Toensure that you get a correct dose, measure the suspension with a dose-measuringspoon or cup, not a regular tablespoon penicillin. If you do not have a dose-measuringdevice, ask your pharmacist where you can get one penicillin.
• Take all of the penicillin V that has been prescribed for you even ifyou begin to feel better penicillin. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infectionis completely treated penicillin.
• Store the tablets and capsules at room temperature and store the suspensionin the refrigerator for longer use penicillin. The suspension is good for 14 days if itis stored in the refrigerator penicillin. Throw away any unused liquid after this amountof time penicillin.
What happens if I miss a dose?
• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember penicillin. However, if it is almosttime for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularlyscheduled dose penicillin. Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwisedirected by your doctor penicillin.
• If you have only missed one dose, you can take the rest of your scheduleddoses for the day at evenly spaced intervals penicillin.
What happens if I overdose?
• Seek emergency medical attention penicillin.
• Symptoms of an penicillin V overdose include muscle spasms or weakness,pain or twitching, pain in the fingers or toes, loss of feeling in the fingersor toes, seizures, confusion, coma, and agitation penicillin.
What should I avoid while taking penicillin V?
• Alcohol may irritate your stomach if taken with penicillin V, so useit with moderation penicillin.
What are the possible side effects of penicillin V?
• If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop takingpenicillin V and seek emergency medical attention:
· an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of your throat;hives; swelling of your lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting);
· seizures;
· severe watery diarrhea and abdominal cramps; or
· unusual bleeding or bruising penicillin.
• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur penicillin. Continueto take penicillin V and talk to your doctor if you experience
· mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain;
· white patches on the tongue (thrush/yeast infection);
· itching or discharge of the vagina (vaginal yeast infection); or
· black, "hairy" tongue or sore mouth or tongue penicillin.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur penicillin. Talk to yourdoctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome penicillin.
What other drugs will affect penicillin V?
• Some drugs may decrease the effects of penicillin V and prevent it fromproperly treating your infection penicillin. Before taking penicillin V, tell your doctorif you are taking any of the following drugs:
· cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid); or
· another antibiotic (for the same or for a different infection) suchas erythromycin (Ery-Tab, E-Mycin, E.E.S., others), tetracycline (Sumycin, others),minocycline (Minocin), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin, others), or any other penicillin.
• Penicillin V may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills penicillin. Usea second method of birth control while taking penicillin V to protect againstpregnancy penicillin.
• Penicillin V increases the effects of methotrexate, and you may needa dose adjustment during therapy with penicillin V penicillin.
• Penicillin V also increases the side effects of allopurinol (Zyloprim)and may cause a rash penicillin.
• Probenecid (Benemid) increases the effects of penicillin V penicillin. These drugsmay be used together for this purpose; however, be sure your doctor is awareif you are taking probenecid penicillin. You may need a lower dose of penicillin penicillin.
• Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with penicillinV penicillin. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-countermedicines penicillin.
